What’s this Trofeo Alfasud about?

The Trofeo Alfasud is a points competition run for AROCA members who drive Alfasud and Alfasud Sprint cars in club motorsport.  Trofeo points are earned for competing in the AROCA club championship as well as participating in other club’s events, as long as you do it in an Alfasud.  The points leaderboard will be updated throughout the year and an awesome trophy momento will be awarded to the winner from each class at the end of the year.

Why?

The existing club championship structure is very well thought out and runs very smoothly, however in most of the classes it is not really possible to be competitive in a Sud without a major development effort.  The Trofeo rules try to make it possible for anyone who gets out there to win, and also to encourage participation as an official or in social events.  Hopefully the playing field is level enough, it’s only the first year so we’ll see.

As a special interest group for Sud racing we hope we can also offer advice to members who haven’t competed before and would like to get out there.  If you aren’t sure how to get started, what’s required and what you need to do to your car, ask us – if we don’t know the answer ourselves we can find someone who does.

Why ‘Trofeo Alfasud’?

In the late 1970s and early 1980s Alfa sponsored one-make series’ across Europe under the banner of the Trofeo Alfasud.  The Suds were built using an Autodelta prepared kit including engine parts, suspension, wheels, aero kit, and safety equipment.  The Suds were in time replaced by Sprints in the Trofeo Sprint.  In Australia the ‘Alfasud Trophy’ was also run in the early 80s, Colin Bond won in 1983 and his prize included a trip to Monza to run in a round of the Trofeo Sprint.

How do I get involved?

Get yourself a cheap Sud or Sprint (ask around the club – there’s usually a few around), get it trackworthy and get yourself out on the track!  Ask a Trofeo member or the competition secretary about the licensing and scrutineering requirements for our events – remember this is motorsport on the cheap so focus on safety first and then on going fast later.

More information including the official points score rules, a gallery, up-to-date leaderboard and a web forum can be found on this site, or contact Ed Hellsten.
